Jaguar's safety first
Jaguar has revealed details of a world-first deployable bonnet system on its new XK.

The Pyrotechnic Pedestrian Deployable Bonnet system raises the bonnet a few inches during a pedestrian impact, creating a 'cushioning' effect to help decrease the risk of injury.

The new system has been developed to allow the XK to meet new European safety legislation while maintaining its low, sleek front end.

(It's a pretty complex idea - and if our explanation below doesn't make any sense, we've got a video that shows you the system in action.)

If the car collides with a pedestrian, a sensor in the front bumper releases the bonnet in one-tenth of the time it takes to blink an eye.

A pyrotechnic ram with an acceleration rate of around 50 times the force of gravity lifts the 18kg bonnet in about 30 milliseconds.

The complex system took about 120 man-years to develop, including thousands of computer simulations and impact testing with inanimate objects to help 'teach' the system to differentiate a person from other potential objects.

The new XK also features a passive bumper system - the front bumper is made using crushable foam to help limit pedestrian leg injury.
